Block paving

Laid to a set pattern with cut edge courses and haunched restraints, so the bond stays true and the edges do not creep away in year three.

How we build it

A drive fails from the bottom up, so we start there

Almost every sunken, rutted, weed-split driveway in Berkshire failed for the same reason: somebody saved a day on the dig and a few tonnes on the base. Here is the order we work in.

We dig it out and take it away

The old surface and the soft ground under it come out to depth and go onto our own lorry. Nothing gets raked to the side and buried under your new drive.

Sub-base, laid and compacted in layers

Compacted stone built up in layers rather than tipped in one go, because a base that has been whacked properly is the only reason a drive is still flat in ten years.

Edge restraints haunched in concrete

Every edge is set and haunched before a block is laid. Without it the outside courses spread, the joints open and the pattern walks. It is the step cowboys skip.

Drainage sorted before the surface

Channel drains, falls and gullies set to take surface water away from the house. Water is dealt with while the ground is still open, not patched afterwards.

Lay, joint, compact, sweep up

Blocks laid to the bond, jointed and vibrated in, or tarmac rolled hot. Then the site is swept and cleared, and we walk the finished drive with you before we load up.
